The 1960s? Vietnam. The Summer of Love. Woodstock. The Kennedy and King assassinations. The moon landing. Zack had studied that era in college, but it was nothing he could really connect with on a personal level. His parents were teenagers then, but as far as he knew, they hadn’t been involved in any headline-making events, nor had his grandparents. They’d all been living simple lives, separate from the drama taking place in the rest of the world.
The same seemed to be true of everyone who’d lived in Friar’s Lake back then.
The little history book Caitlin had given him was very much a PR document, casting the town in the best possible light. Friar’s Lake was, according to the author, the ideal place for families, both as a vacation spot and as a home.
Zack’s smile grew wider and wider as he read the book’s introduction, because it made the town seem like a creation of Walt Disney, where things never got dirty or run-down, crime simply didn’t exist, and you could count on your neighbor to cheerfully give you the shirt off his back.
Beginning with a group of families who’d dropped anchor here because they liked the looks of the place, the population had grown steadily over the years, finally leveling off in the 1950s at around the current number of just under 3,000. The tourist trade began to pick up at the same time, in that post-World War II era of prosperity, consumerism, and travel. During the mid-1960s, you could rent a 2-bedroom cabin (complete with kitchen and the use of a rowboat) for an entire week for the very reasonable sum of $65, and according to the book, families by the hundreds took advantage.
Plenty of places to eat and ways to have fun!
No battles had been fought here. There’d been only one murder, back in the 1930s, and the few robberies there had been didn’t amount to much. Zack had to read between the lines to glean even that much information, since the book didn’t point to anything in particular. By the time he finished reading, he wondered why the book was popular with any of the locals, unless they enjoyed looking at the twenty-odd old photographs that filled most of the book’s pages.
On the flip side of things, he wondered why a 21st-century tourist would want a book like this, since it was so very dated.
Maybe the copies that were being sold came with coupons.
He got up from his bench down near the lake sure that both Lucia and Tommy, back at the office, would insist that something mysterious and deadly was secretly going on here. That from time to time, maybe, people disappeared without a trace, and local law enforcement would always prove to be remarkably unhelpful.
They’d probably even point to Marcy’s bouts of nerves as evidence that she was hiding something.
Maybe Zack himself would eventually disappear without a trace.
